The gap beneath rooftop panels is warm, dry and sheltered from predators, which makes it ideal for feral pigeons. Once a pair settles, the result is droppings on the panels and roof, scratching and cooing noises, feathers and twigs blocking gutters and downpipes, and a build-up of nesting material that can hold moisture against the roof covering. Pigeons breed through much of the year, so a small problem tends to grow.
Proofing closes off the gap with a continuous mesh barrier around the exposed edges of the array. The mesh is attached to the panel frames with clips that grip the frame lip, so nothing is drilled into the panels or the roof and the panel warranty is not affected by fixings. Before the mesh goes on, existing nests, droppings and debris are cleared from underneath, because sealing material in only shifts the smell and mess into the roof.
What is included
- A check for active nests with eggs or chicks before any nesting material is removed
- Clearing out existing nests, droppings, feathers and debris from under the panels
- Clean of the panels, with gutters below the array cleared of nesting debris where reachable
- Galvanised or PVC-coated mesh cut to fit the exposed edges of the array
- Non-drill clips fixed to the panel frames, spaced to keep the mesh tight
- Mesh shaped neatly around corners, gaps between panel rows and roof features
- Photos of the finished proofing where the access allows
Who it is for
- Homes with pigeons seen landing on or flying out from under the panels
- Droppings building up on the roof, panels, patio or windows below
- Cooing, scratching or flapping noises from the roof
- Gutters and downpipes blocked with twigs and feathers
- New installations in areas with large pigeon populations, to stop a problem starting
How much does it cost?
As a guide, bird proofing a typical domestic array usually costs £300 to £800 including clearing nests and a clean. Large or split arrays, three-storey roofs and heavy nesting can cost more, especially if scaffolding is needed. See our full cost guide.
