Solar Panel Cleaners

Commercial and farm solar array cleaning

Cleaning for commercial, school, warehouse and farm solar arrays in the UK, roof and ground-mounted, priced per panel and planned around site rules.

In short: Commercial and farm array cleaning covers larger roof-mounted and ground-mounted systems on barns, warehouses, schools, offices and business premises. It suits sites where soiling is cutting generation and access needs planning. Pricing is usually per panel after a survey, often around £1.50 to £5 per panel depending on array size, access and soiling.

Larger arrays soil faster than most domestic systems. Barn and warehouse roofs are often low pitch, so rain does not rinse them well, and farm sites add dust from fields, livestock buildings and grain handling. Industrial estates and roadside premises collect traffic film and exhaust particulates. On a system of hundreds of panels, a modest soiling loss across the whole array becomes a measurable amount of lost generation and income.

Commercial cleaning uses the same pure water and soft brush method as domestic work, scaled up with longer poles, larger water supplies and, where appropriate, powered rotating brushes designed for panels. Roof work on commercial buildings needs proper planning because many have fragile roof lights or fibre cement sheets, so access is agreed in advance with a method statement. Ground-mounted arrays can often be cleaned from the ground with poles or vehicle-mounted equipment.

What is included

  • Site survey or photo review to confirm panel count, layout, roof type and access
  • Risk assessment and method statement for roof work or site rules when requested
  • Pure water cleaning with soft brushes, scaled for larger arrays
  • Planning around site hours, livestock, deliveries, pupils or public access
  • Ground-mounted array cleaning, including the lower edges where soil splash collects
  • Notes on damaged panels, loose cabling, vegetation shading or nesting found during the clean
  • Scheduling for repeat cleans on a fixed interval if required

Who it is for

  • Farms with arrays on barns, livestock sheds or ground mounts near arable land
  • Warehouses, factories and industrial units with low-pitch roof arrays
  • Schools, offices, care homes and community buildings with solar
  • Sites where monitoring shows falling generation not explained by faults
  • Businesses that need paperwork such as risk assessments for contractors

How much does it cost?

As a guide, commercial and farm arrays are usually priced per panel after a survey, commonly around £1.50 to £5 per panel, with the lower end for large, easy-access ground arrays and the higher end for small roof arrays with difficult access. See our full cost guide.

How it works

  1. Survey and quote

Panel count, layout, access, water supply and roof type are reviewed, and a per panel price is agreed before work is booked.

  2. Paperwork and access

Risk assessments, method statements and site induction requirements are sorted out, with roof access planned around fragile surfaces.

  3. Clean in sections

The array is cleaned section by section, so the site can keep operating and any isolated areas are handled to plan.

  4. Report

A short summary confirms what was cleaned and flags issues such as damaged panels, shading or nesting for your maintenance contractor.

Commercial and farm solar array cleaning: FAQs

How often should a commercial solar array be cleaned?

Many commercial and farm arrays benefit from a clean once or twice a year, more often near livestock, grain handling, quarries or main roads. The best way to decide is to compare generation data before and after a clean, alongside weather-adjusted expectations. If a clean recovers a meaningful amount of output, the interval can be set so cleaning costs stay below the value of the energy recovered.

Can you clean panels on a fragile roof?

Many agricultural and industrial roofs have fragile roof lights or fibre cement sheets that will not take a person's weight. HSE guidance treats falls through fragile roofs as a serious risk, so work should be planned to avoid standing on them. Options include cleaning from the ground or a mobile platform with long poles, or using edge protection and crawling boards where roof access is unavoidable.

Do you need to shut the system down?

Usually not for a pure water and soft brush clean, which does not involve the electrical side of the system. Site rules sometimes require isolation of specific areas, and damaged panels or exposed cabling should be made safe by a competent electrician before cleaning near them. Your operations and maintenance contractor or installer can advise on any isolation needed.

Is water needed on site?

A supply helps on large arrays, but many cleaners bring purified water in tanks on the van or trailer. For very large ground-mounted arrays, filtering mains or tanked water on site is common. Water availability, distance from the array and any restrictions on runoff are worth confirming at the survey stage.
