About our solar panel cleaning service

Rain keeps lightly soiled solar panels reasonably clean in the UK, but it does not shift bird droppings, lichen, moss creeping in from the frame, or the grime that builds up on low-pitch panels and arrays near trees, farmland and busy roads. Anything that shades part of a panel cuts what it can generate, and on many systems a heavily soiled panel can drag down the output of the whole string.

We clean panels with purified water and soft-bristle brushes on water-fed poles, working from the ground or a safe access point wherever possible. Purified water leaves no mineral spots as it dries, so no detergents are needed and nothing harsh touches the glass, the anti-reflective coating or the seals. Where pigeons are nesting under the array, we can fit mesh proofing at the same visit.

Our solar panel cleaning services

Domestic solar panel cleaning

Rooftop panels on houses, bungalows and extensions cleaned with purified water and soft brushes on water-fed poles, usually from the ground with no one standing on the panels or the roof.

Bird dropping and lichen removal

Stubborn bird fouling, lichen spots and moss growing in from the frame edges are softened and gently brushed away without scrapers, abrasive pads or pressure washers that could scratch the glass.

Solar panel bird proofing

Galvanised or PVC-coated mesh fitted around the edge of the array with clips that do not drill the panels, stopping pigeons nesting underneath, plus clearing out existing nests and debris.

Commercial and farm arrays

Larger roof-mounted and ground-mounted systems on barns, warehouses, schools and business premises, priced per panel and planned around access and site rules.

Regular maintenance cleans

Annual or twice-yearly cleans for properties near trees, fields, coastlines or main roads, where panels soil faster than rain can wash them.

Visual panel check

While we clean we look for cracked glass, loose cabling, slipped panels, nesting and heavy shading, and tell you about anything you may want a solar installer or electrician to look at.

How it works

  1. Send your details

Tell us roughly how many panels you have, the roof type and height, and whether birds are a problem. A photo of the array helps.

  2. Fixed quote

You get one clear price for the clean, and a separate price for bird proofing if you want it.

  3. Book a date

We pick a dry, still day and aim for early or late in the day when the glass is cooler.

  4. Pure water clean

Panels and frames are brushed and rinsed with purified water from water-fed poles, so they dry clear without spots or residue.

  5. Report back

We let you know the job is done and flag anything we noticed, such as damaged panels or signs of nesting.

Why choose Solar Panel Cleaners

Purified water and soft brushes only, no pressure washers, scrapers or harsh chemicals on the glass.

Safer access

Most domestic panels are cleaned from the ground with water-fed poles, so no one walks on your roof or panels.

Spot-free finish

Purified water dries clear, leaving no mineral marks or detergent film to attract new dirt.

Clear pricing

One fixed price agreed before we arrive, with bird proofing quoted separately.

Solar panel cleaning: frequently asked questions

Do solar panels need cleaning in the UK?

Not always. UK rain keeps lightly dusty panels fairly clean, especially on steeper roofs. Cleaning is worthwhile when you can see bird droppings, lichen, moss or a film of grime, when panels are low-pitched, or when the property is near trees, farmland, the coast or a busy road. The Energy Saving Trust suggests checking panels every 12 to 18 months and cleaning them if they are visibly dirty.

How much output do dirty panels lose?

It depends on how dirty they are. A light film of dust usually makes only a small difference, often a few percent, whereas heavy bird fouling or lichen that shades part of a panel can cut its output much more and can pull down other panels on the same string. If output has dropped sharply and the panels look clean, the cause may be a fault such as an inverter problem, which needs a solar installer or electrician.

How are solar panels cleaned?

We use water-fed poles with soft-bristle brushes and purified water that has had its minerals removed by reverse osmosis and deionisation. The panels are brushed, then rinsed, and the pure water dries without leaving spots, so no detergent is needed. It also means most domestic panels can be cleaned from the ground.

Can I pressure wash my solar panels?

It is not recommended. High-pressure water can damage the anti-reflective coating, force water past seals and junction boxes, and may affect the manufacturer's warranty. Abrasive pads, scrapers and strong chemicals carry similar risks. A soft brush and purified water is the safe way to clean them.

How often should solar panels be cleaned?

For most UK homes once a year, or once every two years, is plenty. Properties near trees, fields, coastlines, main roads or with pigeons nearby may need cleaning twice a year. Low-pitch and flat-roof arrays also soil faster than panels on a steep roof.

What is solar panel bird proofing?

Pigeons like to nest in the sheltered gap under rooftop panels, which leads to droppings on the panels and roof, noise and debris blocking gutters. Bird proofing fits a mesh skirt around the edge of the array, held with clips that do not drill the panels or roof, after any existing nests and mess are cleared out.

Do I need to be home for the clean?

Usually not, as long as we can get safe access to the side or back of the property and there is somewhere to park the van. We will let you know when the job is done. For bird proofing we may need roof access, which we arrange with you in advance.

Can you clean panels on a three-storey house or a flat roof?

In most cases, yes. Water-fed poles can reach panels on two and three-storey roofs from the ground. Flat-roof and some commercial arrays need safe roof access, so we confirm how we will reach them when we quote.
