Domestic solar panel cleaning

Domestic solar panel cleaning in the UK with purified water and soft brushes on water-fed poles, usually from the ground. Typical 2026 prices explained.

In short: Domestic solar panel cleaning is a pure water wash of the panels on a house, bungalow or extension, done with soft brushes on water-fed poles, usually from the ground. It suits homeowners whose panels have visible grime, droppings or lichen. A typical UK house usually costs £80 to £180 depending on panel numbers and roof height.

Domestic solar panel cleaning

Most UK homes with solar have somewhere between 8 and 16 panels on a pitched roof, often on the south, east or west elevation. Rain rinses off loose dust, but it leaves behind the sticky film from traffic, pollen and tree sap, and it does nothing to bird droppings or lichen that have bonded to the glass. On a lower-pitch roof or an extension with shallow panels, water sits longer and dirt collects along the bottom edge of each panel where it meets the frame.

A domestic clean uses purified water fed up a lightweight carbon pole to a soft brush. The cleaner scrubs each panel and frame, then rinses with the same water, which has had its minerals removed so it dries without spotting. Because the work is done from the ground or from a safe standing point, no one walks on the panels or the roof tiles, which avoids cracked glass, damaged cells and broken tiles. Most domestic cleans take between thirty minutes and two hours.

What is included

  • Pure water wash of every panel on the roof, including the frames and the gap along the bottom edge where dirt builds up
  • Soft-bristle brush agitation to lift traffic film, pollen, sap and light bird fouling
  • Final rinse with purified water so the glass dries clear without wiping
  • Cleaning from the ground with water-fed poles on most two and three-storey houses
  • Panels on extensions, garages, porches and outbuildings cleaned in the same visit if requested
  • A check from the ground for cracked glass, slipped panels, loose cables and signs of nesting
  • Water and power supplied from the van, so an outside tap is not usually needed

Who it is for

  • Homeowners whose panels have visibly dulled, streaked or marked since they were fitted
  • Panels that have never been cleaned in the several years since installation
  • Low-pitch roofs, dormers and extensions where rain does not run off well
  • Homes near trees, farmland, building sites, busy roads or the coast
  • Owners who have noticed generation falling compared with the same month in previous years
  • Anyone who wants the panels cleaned without someone climbing on the roof

How much does it cost?

As a guide, a domestic clean usually costs £80 to £180 for a typical house, often worked out at about £4 to £15 per panel with a minimum charge. Three-storey homes, heavy soiling and split arrays on several roof faces tend to sit at the top of that range. See our full cost guide.

How it works

How domestic solar panel cleaning works, step by step
  1. Count and assess

From your photo or a quick look on arrival, the number of panels, roof height and level of soiling are confirmed against the quote.

  2. Pre-soak heavy spots

Areas with bird droppings or lichen are wetted first with purified water so they soften while the rest of the array is brushed.

  3. Brush and rinse

Each panel and frame is scrubbed with a soft brush on the pole, then rinsed from the top down so dirty water runs off the array.

  4. Final check

The array is checked from the ground once it starts drying, any missed patches are re-washed, and you are told about anything worth reporting to your installer.

Domestic solar panel cleaning: FAQs

How long does a domestic solar panel clean take?

A typical array of 8 to 16 panels usually takes between thirty minutes and an hour and a half. Larger systems, panels on more than one roof face, heavy bird fouling or lichen, and three-storey houses take longer. You do not normally need to be home, provided the cleaner can reach the side or back of the property safely and park nearby.

Do you need to switch the solar panels off before cleaning?

No. Panels cleaned with purified water and soft brushes from the ground do not need to be isolated, and the system can keep running. The cleaner does not touch the cabling, junction boxes or inverter. If a panel is visibly cracked or a cable is hanging loose, it should be left alone and reported to your installer or an electrician before anyone cleans near it.

Will cleaning damage my roof tiles?

Cleaning with water-fed poles puts almost no load on the roof, because the brush is light and no one is standing on the tiles. Purified water is not sprayed at high pressure, so it is not driven under tiles or into the roof space. That is one of the main reasons pole cleaning from the ground is preferred over walking on the roof.

Can my window cleaner clean the solar panels?

Many window cleaners who use water-fed poles and purified water also clean solar panels, and the method is the same. Check they use soft brushes rather than abrasive pads, use pure water with no detergents, can reach the height of your array safely, and will not walk on the roof or panels. Ask whether the price covers the whole array including any hard-to-reach sections.
